Heavy gunfire in Abuja as Nigerian soldiers, Shi’ites clash during ‘free Palestinians’ protest

A protest in Abuja turned violent as members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shi’ites, clashed with Nigerian soldiers. The demonstration was against what they described as “injustice against Palestinians by Israel” in Gaza.

A viral video from Friday showed a large group of Shi’ite protesters marching at Bannex, Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, Wuse 2, to express their concerns over the situation in Gaza.

The clash happened just hours after the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria issued a security alert. The embassy had warned American citizens about planned IMN protests in Abuja and other major cities.

The security warning also listed possible protest locations, including Banex Plaza, Berger Junction, Unity Fountain, the National Human Rights Commission Head Office, Eagle Square, Area 10 Shopping Plaza, the National Mosque, Al-Noor Mosque, and Fouad Lababidi Mosque.

There are no confirmed reports on the number of casualties or arrests from the clash. Authorities are yet to give an official statement on the situation.
