Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has spoken about his challenging return to the club in 2023. Lampard, who took over as caretaker manager in April that year, admitted that his experience at Stamford Bridge during that period was not enjoyable.
Chelsea’s owners, led by Todd Boehly, had dismissed both Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter earlier in the season. As a result, Lampard was brought in to help stabilize the team for the remainder of the campaign. However, his time in charge was far from successful, with Chelsea winning just one of their 11 games under him.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Lampard revealed that he noticed things at the club that were not right for a top-level football team. He expressed frustration at not being able to implement his ideas, knowing that he was only in the role temporarily.
“I didn’t love working in that short period because it’s hard to lay down an idea when you’re going to be leaving, but Chelsea will always be a massive club in my life,” he said.
He also pointed out that the club was in a period of transition, with several players either preparing to leave or struggling with motivation. This made it difficult to create a unified team spirit.
Although he didn’t gain any new tactical insights from his second spell at Chelsea, Lampard said the experience reinforced what he already knew about managing a team. He stressed that when a squad is united and working towards the same goal, success is much easier to achieve. However, when motivation and focus are lacking, results suffer.
Despite the disappointing results, Lampard remains an important figure in Chelsea’s history. His reflections provide a deeper understanding of the club’s struggles during that period and highlight the challenges of managing a team in transition.
