Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has shared that both Arsenal and Chelsea were interested in signing him before he moved to Old Trafford.
Onana joined Manchester United in July 2023 in a £47.2 million transfer from Inter Milan. Before that, he played one season at Inter after leaving Ajax, where he spent six years and won three Eredivisie titles.
In a recent interview with Le Média Carré, Onana mentioned that several clubs had shown interest in him in the past. When asked about teams that wanted to sign him while he was at Ajax, he said:
“I had Monaco, I had Nice, I had Atlético Madrid, I had Chelsea, Arsenal.”
However, when asked which club he came closest to joining from Ajax, Onana revealed that it was Lyon. He had advanced talks with the club’s president and technical director.
“I spoke with the president and the technical director, so it was advanced anyway. It was difficult for me to speak with the president because I had decided to learn Italian.”
Despite interest from multiple clubs, Onana eventually moved to Inter Milan on a free transfer before making his way to Manchester United.
