Ogun State has confirmed an outbreak of Lassa fever following the death of a 25-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.
The young woman, who initially fell sick in Ondo State, was brought to a hospital in Ijebu North Local Government Area on March 18, 2025. Sadly, she passed away the same day.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, announced the outbreak in a statement, urging residents to stay alert.
Lassa fever is a serious viral disease that causes high fever, headaches, sore throat, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chest pain, and unexplained bleeding from body openings like the nose, ears, and mouth.
Dr. Coker advised anyone experiencing symptoms that do not improve after 48 hours of malaria or antibiotic treatment to seek immediate medical attention. She also called on health facilities, both public and private, to strengthen infection control measures.
Healthcare workers who suspect a case of Lassa fever are urged to contact their local disease surveillance officers. The state government has provided emergency contact numbers for reporting suspected cases.
The Ogun State government, under Governor Dapo Abiodun, is working to control the situation. The health ministry, in collaboration with the Rapid Response Team in Ijebu North East, has intensified surveillance and community awareness efforts to prevent further spread.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed, practice good hygiene, and report any suspicious symptoms promptly.
