Nigerian singer Cynthia Morgan, now known as Madrina, has voiced her concerns over the severe economic hardship in the country. She called on President Bola Tinubu to take urgent action, as many Nigerians are struggling to cope.
In a recent video shared on TikTok, Madrina admitted that she initially supported Tinubu’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy. However, she now feels that the country is not prepared for the consequences of this policy.
Madrina explained that removing the subsidy was supposed to save Nigeria money, as spending over $8 billion on subsidized fuel didn’t seem logical. However, she now believes that the economy is not strong enough to handle the full removal.
According to her, Nigeria’s revenue in 2023/2024 was around $20 billion, and spending $7 billion on fuel subsidies seemed excessive. Yet, she admitted that without the subsidy, the cost of living has skyrocketed.
She pointed out that fuel prices directly impact the cost of almost everything in the market. Additionally, the value of the Naira has dropped because Nigeria imports more than it exports. This has made basic necessities unaffordable for many people.
Madrina acknowledged that Tinubu was trying to fix a long-standing issue but argued that Nigeria lacks the necessary structures to handle complete subsidy removal. She warned that the rising cost of living is leading to more hunger and crime.
Instead of protesting, she suggested that Nigerians should appeal to the government for help. She proposed a “begging challenge” where people politely request the government to bring back at least 50% of the subsidy.
She emphasized that while subsidy removal can help the country in the long run, the current situation is unbearable. People are suffering, and something must be done to ease their struggles.
Madrina’s message reflects the frustration of many Nigerians who are feeling the impact of economic policies. Now, all eyes are on the government to see if they will take action to reduce the hardship.
