The House of Representatives has dismissed allegations that its members received $5,000 each to approve President Bola Tinubu’s request for a state of emergency in Rivers State.
Deputy House spokesman, Philip Agbese, strongly rejected the claims, calling them false and aimed at misleading the public. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, he said the decision was made purely out of patriotism and the need to restore peace in Rivers State.
Agbese explained that the House carefully considered the security and political situation in Rivers before agreeing to the emergency declaration. He emphasized that lawmakers were not influenced by money but acted in the country’s best interest.
“The claim that we were given money to support the emergency declaration is a lie,” he stated. “We made this decision after thorough discussions, and it was necessary to prevent further crises in the state.”
He compared the decision to the wisdom of King Solomon, saying the President took action to help resolve conflicts between different political groups in Rivers State.
The House of Representatives made some important changes before approving the emergency declaration. These include:
- The National Assembly will take over the legislative duties of the Rivers State Assembly during the emergency period.
- The six-month duration is flexible. If peace is restored sooner, the emergency can be lifted before the 180-day period ends.
Agbese expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s commitment to democracy, saying he would not allow the emergency rule to last longer than necessary.
Agbese blamed political opponents for spreading the bribery rumors, calling them attempts to discredit the House. He assured Nigerians that lawmakers remain committed to democracy and national stability.
He also confirmed that the House had enough members present to meet the quorum requirement, with 243 lawmakers participating in the decision.
In conclusion, Agbese urged Nigerians to trust the House of Representatives, stating that both the Rivers State Government and Assembly will emerge stronger after the emergency period.
