The Coalition for Democracy and Development (CDD) has urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, to set aside their personal interests and sign a new peace agreement within 90 days.
In a statement, CDD’s convener, Dr. George Ifure, criticized both leaders, saying their selfish interests have caused the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. The group warned that if they fail to take action, they will be held responsible for the situation.
The political tension in Rivers State has been growing, leading to President Bola Tinubu declaring a state of emergency. This resulted in the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the state assembly.
CDD pointed out that a previous peace agreement between Wike and Fubara, signed in December 2023, failed to bring lasting peace. The group is now calling for a renewed commitment to resolving the crisis.
The coalition urged President Tinubu to take decisive action in handling the crisis, stating that this is a crucial moment for Nigerian democracy.
“We call on Wike and Governor Fubara to put aside their differences and work towards signing a new peace deal within 90 days,” CDD stated.
The group also encouraged all stakeholders to focus on a peaceful and democratic resolution to restore stability in Rivers State.
With tensions still high, all eyes are on the key political figures to see if they will take action before the deadline.
