Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice-Admiral Ibok Ibas (retd), has directed the immediate payment of unpaid salaries for local government workers. This decision comes after months of financial difficulties caused by the suspension of the state’s monthly allocations.
Local government workers in Rivers State had not received their salaries for February and March. Ibas explained that this was due to the Supreme Court’s decision on February 28, 2025, which nullified the local government elections held in October 2024.
This ruling led to the temporary withholding of the state’s monthly allocations, affecting salary payments.
However, with the funds now released, Ibas assured workers that their salaries would be paid immediately.
“I understand the financial struggles these workers have faced. Now that the funds have been released, I am directing immediate payment to ensure they get what they are owed,” he said.
Ibas also emphasized the importance of accountability in managing public funds. He warned against reckless spending at the local government level and assured that his administration would closely monitor financial activities.
To ensure proper oversight, he directed all local government areas to submit their salary records to his office through the Head of Service. He stressed that financial reports must be accurate and transparent to prevent mismanagement.
“My administration will not tolerate any misuse of public funds. Every kobo must be accounted for, and there will be no room for wastefulness,” he stated.
During a separate meeting with traditional rulers, Ibas highlighted the need for peace and stability in Rivers State. He noted that political conflicts had created tension and instability, urging traditional leaders to play a key role in maintaining harmony in their communities.
“You are the bridge between the government and the people. Your leadership is essential in resolving conflicts and fostering unity,” he told them.
He also advised traditional rulers to avoid partisanship and report any illegal activities to the authorities.
Ibas emphasized that his leadership would focus on service and sacrifice rather than personal gain. He encouraged government officials to be accountable and work towards a better future for Rivers State.
“Leadership is about serving the people, not personal benefits. Let’s work together to build a legacy of good governance,” he said.
The meeting ended with support from both the local government workers and traditional rulers, who pledged to work with the new administration to ensure stability and progress in Rivers State.
