Ceasefire: Russia seeks ‘ironclad’ guarantees in peace treaty with Ukraine

Russia has made it clear that any peace agreement with Ukraine must include strong security promises. These guarantees should ensure that Ukraine stays neutral and does not join NATO.

Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko stated that Russia will demand “ironclad security guarantees” in any long-term peace treaty. One of the key conditions is that NATO countries must agree not to allow Ukraine to join the alliance. Moscow is also firmly against NATO observers being sent to Ukraine.

The United States, led by President Donald Trump, is working to secure a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. Ukraine has already agreed to this proposal, but Russia wants certain conditions met before accepting it.

US envoy Steve Witkoff recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and described the discussions as positive. Trump is expected to speak with Putin soon to find a way to end the three-year war.

Britain and France have shown interest in sending peacekeeping forces to Ukraine to monitor any ceasefire. Australia is also open to considering such requests.

However, Russia strongly opposes any NATO presence in Ukraine, even if the troops are labeled as peacekeepers. Grushko warned that if NATO forces enter Ukraine, they will be seen as part of the conflict.

French President Emmanuel Macron believes the decision to allow peacekeeping forces should be made by Ukraine, not Russia. Meanwhile, Russia insists that unarmed observers can only be discussed after a full peace agreement is reached.

The future of peace talks depends on whether Russia’s demands are met. While efforts are being made to end the war, disagreements over security guarantees and international involvement remain major challenges.
