Akwa Ibom Police confirm arrest of man who allegedly murdered girlfriend, stole phone

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man, Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Emem Monday Effanga, and stealing her phone.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, the case was reported in February 2025 after the victim was found dead in her apartment under suspicious circumstances.

Officers who arrived at the scene noticed injuries on her face and neck, indicating that she had been beaten and strangled. Her body was taken to the hospital, where doctors confirmed she was dead.

Police investigations revealed that the last person seen with the victim was Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson. He had visited her on February 6, 2025, which was the morning of his birthday. Officers tracked him to a church in Uyo, where he tried to escape but was arrested.

During questioning, Nelson admitted that he had asked to use the victim’s phone to take birthday pictures for social media. When she refused, an argument broke out, and he attacked her.

He confessed to strangling her, hitting her head on the floor, and leaving her unconscious before running away with her phone. Police recovered an Itel Super Phone, which belonged to the victim, from him.

A post-mortem examination has confirmed the cause of death, and police say Nelson will face charges in court. The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has assured that justice will be served. He also warned against domestic violence and urged the public to stay alert and report suspicious activities.
