The Taraba State Government has explained why Deputy Governor Aminu Alkali has been absent since November 2024. His long absence had raised concerns among residents.
According to the State Commissioner for Information and Reorientation, Zainab Usman, Alkali has been receiving medical treatment after suffering a stroke. The illness affected his ability to speak, but he is recovering and hopes to return to duty soon.
Zainab revealed that the deputy governor first received treatment in Abuja before being transferred to Cairo, Egypt, for further medical care. She urged the people of Taraba to sympathize with Alkali, emphasizing that illness can happen to anyone.
She also addressed concerns about his long absence, clarifying that the law does not require the impeachment of a deputy governor after 90 days away. She stated that only the governor has the power to determine his eligibility to remain in office.
Meanwhile, Taraba’s Commissioner for Health, Bordiya Buma, who visited Alkali in Egypt, confirmed that he is responding well to treatment. He assured the public that the deputy governor would soon return to continue his duties.
The state government remains hopeful about his full recovery and looks forward to his return.
