NAFDAC Destroys Fake Drugs Worth Over ₦100 Billion In Oyo State

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken a major step in the fight against fake and expired medicines.

The agency recently destroyed counterfeit drugs worth over ₦100 billion at the Moniya dump site in Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State.

NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the agency’s mission to protect Nigerians from dangerous products.

She stated that NAFDAC is working hard to ensure that food, medicines, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, packaged water, and beverages meet safety standards.

Speaking on behalf of Prof. Adeyeye, NAFDAC’s Director of Narcotics and Controlled Substances, Yedunni Adenuga, explained that strict regulations have been put in place to control the sale and distribution of medicines. These measures aim to prevent fake drugs from entering the market.

NAFDAC, with support from the National Security Adviser, recently carried out raids in major drug markets across Nigeria. These markets include:

  • Idumota in Lagos
  • Onitsha in Anambra
  • Ariaria in Abia
  • Ezeukwu in Abia

The operation involved over 1,000 security personnel from the Military, Police, and Department of State Services (DSS).

NAFDAC discovered and seized several banned and fake drugs, including:

  • Tramadol 225mg – A highly abused controlled drug
  • Analgin – A painkiller banned in Nigeria
  • Other unregistered and substandard medicines

The agency warned that these drugs pose serious health risks and contribute to insecurity in the country.

During the three-week operation, several suspects were arrested and are currently being investigated. NAFDAC has assured Nigerians that those found guilty will be punished according to the law.

NAFDAC urged Nigerians to remain alert and report any suspicious drug distribution activities. This will help protect public health and keep dangerous medicines off the street.
