Footballer forced to retire at 16 after discovery of rare medical condition just before life-changing move

Ben Dumigan, a promising 16-year-old footballer from Cork City, has announced his retirement from professional football after being diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM).

Dumigan was undergoing medical tests in January before a potential move to Bundesliga club Hoffenheim when doctors discovered the heart condition. HCM causes abnormal thickening of the heart muscle, increasing the risk of severe complications during intense physical activity.

Although he can still live a healthy life and participate in moderate exercise, the stress of professional football could lead to dangerous heart rhythm issues.

Cork City confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement, expressing their support for Dumigan:

“It is with a heavy heart that we today confirm the retirement of young 16-year-old defender, Ben Dumigan. At the end of January, whilst undergoing medical tests in advance of signing for Bundesliga club Hoffenheim, Ben received a diagnosis of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM).”

Dumigan, who joined Cork City as an Under-14 player and had been selected for the Republic of Ireland’s Under-17 team, was shocked by the diagnosis. However, he remains grateful for the support he has received during this difficult time.

“Announcing my retirement from competitive football at such a young age is something I never imagined I would have to do. The diagnosis has been a shock, but it may have saved my life. I feel overwhelmed by the support from my family, friends, and everyone at Cork City, Hoffenheim, and my school,” he said.

Cork City’s Head of Academy, Liam Kearney, praised Dumigan’s talent and resilience:

“Ben’s skill was evident, and his international call-ups and potential Hoffenheim move reflected that. Although his playing career has ended, we will continue to support him through this life-changing transition. His positivity and strength will serve him well in the future.”

Despite the setback, Dumigan remains optimistic about his future beyond football, knowing that his health comes first.
