A US State Department worker, Michael Charles Schena, has been accused of leaking secret government information. The Justice Department announced on Friday that Schena, 42, faces criminal charges for sharing sensitive details with people he met online.
Schena, who worked as a South Caribbean desk officer, had top-secret clearance and access to classified information. According to court documents, he started sharing information in exchange for money in April 2022.
Authorities say surveillance footage showed Schena taking pictures of at least five secret diplomatic documents at his office last month. He was arrested the same day outside his home in Virginia.
The Justice Department has not revealed what the documents contained or who received them. Schena has not yet entered a plea, and his lawyer has not made a statement. The State Department has also not commented on the case.
