I almost got six months suspension for disclosing senators’ allowances in 2018 – Shehu Sani

Former Nigerian senator, Shehu Sani, has shared how he was nearly suspended from the Senate for six months in 2018 after revealing the allowances of federal lawmakers.

In a post on his X handle on Thursday, March 6, Sani said he would have faced suspension if not for the “Divine intervention” of the Senate President at the time and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.

The former senator from Kaduna explained that any lawmaker who openly speaks about senators’ earnings risks facing serious consequences. He added that those who expose such information should not expect support from their colleagues.

Sani had previously revealed that each senator in Nigeria received a monthly salary of N750,000 along with a hefty monthly allowance of N13.5 million. His disclosure sparked debates about transparency in government spending.

When I publicly disclosed the salaries and allowances of the Senators,it nearly earned me a SIX months suspension if not for Divine Intervention,Saraki and Ekwerenmadu’s immediate rescue.Just know that if you are there and you blow whistle too loudly, you will be “On your Own”,no senator go bring him head or neck to support you.”
