Ex-presidential aide Obono-Obla faults Senate’s 90-day suspension of Natasha

Former presidential aide, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, has spoken against the Senate’s decision to suspend Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months. She was suspended for allegedly breaking Senate rules and accusing Senate President Dr. Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment.

Obono-Obla believes the punishment is too harsh and unfair compared to past cases. He pointed out that in previous instances, Senators Ali Ndume and Ovie Omo-Agege were each suspended for 90 legislative days.

He stated that the Senate should stand for truth, justice, and the rule of law. Speaking to DAILY POST, Obono-Obla explained that the National Assembly is responsible for making laws that ensure peace, stability, and good governance in Nigeria.

He recalled that in 2017, Senator Mohammed Ndume was suspended for 90 days for allegedly damaging the reputation of the Senate and a fellow senator. However, a Federal High Court later ruled that the suspension was unlawful and unconstitutional.

Similarly, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was suspended for 90 days after challenging a Senate decision in court. But another court ruling stated that, based on Senate rules, a senator should not be suspended for more than 14 days. The court then canceled Omo-Agege’s suspension.

Obono-Obla also pointed out that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has already taken legal action against the Senate at the Federal High Court. He argued that since the case is in court, the Senate should not have discussed or acted on it, according to its own rules.

He urged the Senate to follow legal procedures and ensure justice is served fairly.
