President Bola Tinubu has celebrated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday, recognizing his impact on Nigeria’s leadership and national development. Despite sometimes being controversial, Obasanjo continues to influence public policies and serve as a guide for leadership, Tinubu said.
In a special birthday message, Tinubu described Obasanjo as a leader whose life has been deeply connected to Nigeria’s history for over six decades. He praised Obasanjo’s service in the Nigerian Army, noting his role in receiving the surrender that ended the Nigerian Civil War.
Tinubu also highlighted Obasanjo’s leadership as a military head of state in 1976, when he successfully transitioned Nigeria to civilian rule in 1979. He later returned as a democratic president in 1999, helping to rebuild the country’s democracy.
The president acknowledged Obasanjo’s global influence, noting his role in peacekeeping and governance advocacy across Africa. While some of his actions spark debate, Tinubu said Obasanjo’s contributions to Nigeria’s progress cannot be ignored.
Tinubu wished him good health and more years of service to Nigeria and Africa. He praised Obasanjo’s leadership and expressed gratitude on behalf of the government and people of Nigeria.
Happy 88th Birthday, President Obasanjo!
