Calvin Bassey, the Fulham defender, has shared why he decided to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria instead of England or Italy.
Bassey was born in Italy to Nigerian parents and later moved to England. This made him eligible to play for all three countries. However, in 2021, he chose to represent Nigeria.
His decision was inspired by watching Nigeria play against Argentina in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. That game, where Lionel Messi’s Argentina won 2-1, left a lasting impression on him.
“I saw the greatest player ever playing against my team,” Bassey told NBC Sports. “One of my teammates, Kenneth Omeruo, played in that match. Watching them, I knew I wanted to be in that position.”
Bassey also recognized the pride and passion that come with playing for Nigeria. So, when the opportunity came, he didn’t hesitate.
Since then, he has made 29 appearances for the Super Eagles and was part of the squad that finished second in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
Bassey’s story shows his deep connection to his Nigerian roots and his determination to be part of the team.
