A tragic incident occurred at Southern University as a 20-year-old student, Caleb Wilson, passed away after reportedly taking part in an off-campus fraternity ritual.
Wilson, a junior studying mechanical engineering, was allegedly involved in an initiation event for Omega Psi Phi when he suddenly collapsed. Witnesses told police that participants had been standing in a line during the process when Wilson lost consciousness.
His friends rushed him to Baton Rouge Hospital early Thursday morning, but he was unresponsive upon arrival. Hospital staff pronounced him dead and informed the Baton Rouge Police Department at 3:15 a.m.
The event took place at North Sherwood Forest Community Park, where investigators are now looking into the circumstances of his death.
Southern University released a statement expressing condolences to Wilson’s family, classmates, and loved ones. The school is fully cooperating with the police as the investigation continues.
Authorities have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of Wilson’s death.
