US needs role in Ukraine to deter Putin from invading Ukraine again – UK PM

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called for a strong US security guarantee in Ukraine to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin from attacking again.

As he traveled to Washington DC for talks with Donald Trump, Starmer emphasized the importance of US support in maintaining peace in Europe.

Speaking to reporters, Starmer said discussions about sending British troops to Ukraine were ongoing. However, he stressed that a US “backstop” was necessary to ensure long-term security.

He did not specify the exact form this support should take but insisted that the goal was to create lasting peace, not just a temporary ceasefire.

Trump, on the other hand, has been cautious about making firm security commitments. He stated that Europe should take the lead in guaranteeing Ukraine’s safety, as it is directly affected by the conflict.

However, he did acknowledge that a US-Ukraine deal on mineral access could provide indirect security, as the presence of American personnel would discourage any aggression.

At a reception in Washington, Starmer spoke about strengthening ties between the UK and the US, saying he believes “our best days lie ahead.”

British Ambassador Lord Mandelson also highlighted the strong historical relationship between the two nations, calling the US a “very consequential” partner.

With ongoing discussions about military support and security agreements, the future of Ukraine remains a key topic in UK-US relations. Starmer is pushing for a strong and lasting solution, warning that without firm guarantees, Putin may attempt another invasion.
