Police restore Obasa’s security details after withdrawing current speaker Meranda’s security

Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was removed as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, is likely to return to his position.

Reports say that his security details have been restored, while those of his replacement, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn.

Meranda, who was Obasa’s deputy, became Speaker after his impeachment, making history as the first female Speaker in Lagos.

However, despite not resigning, her time in office seems to be ending due to pressure from top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Over the weekend, senior APC members, including Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Olusegun Osoba, Dr. Muiz Banire, and others, met to discuss the issue. They concluded that Obasa’s removal was not legal and that he should be reinstated.

Although the exact date for the official change is unknown, signs suggest Obasa will soon take back his position.

Reports also confirm that security officers assigned to Speaker Meranda and the Assembly have been withdrawn. Meranda’s media aide, Ganzallo Victor, has expressed concern, warning that both the Speaker and the Assembly are now unprotected.

The situation remains tense. Two weeks ago, Meranda adjourned plenary indefinitely after the Department of State Services (DSS) operatives entered the Assembly.
