Jonathan, Jega bemoan political interference on INEC appointments

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, have expressed concerns over political interference in the appointment of electoral officials.

They spoke at a conference in Abuja organized by Yiaga Africa, a pro-democracy group. The event, titled the Reflection Conference on Democratic Elections in West Africa, focused on improving election credibility.

Jonathan emphasized that INEC must be truly independent and led by honest individuals. He urged political leaders who pressure election officials to act unfairly to step down.

Jega also pointed out that political influence affects how electoral commissioners and other officials are appointed or removed. He encouraged citizens, civil society groups, and advocates for democracy to continue pushing for free and fair elections.

The call for INEC’s independence highlights the need for a transparent electoral process in Nigeria.
