Popular Nigerian comedian, Otaghware Onodjayeke, better known as IGoSave, has raised concerns about the high cost and poor quality of internet services in Nigeria.
He is urging the government and relevant agencies to investigate telecom companies, claiming they are unfairly charging Nigerians for data that doesn’t last.
Speaking in a video on social media, IGoSave, who is currently in the UK, shared his experience with internet services there.
He explained that he purchased 20GB of data three weeks ago, and it was still working at a fast speed. He was even surprised when his service provider told him he didn’t need to buy more data because he still had enough.
Comparing this to Nigeria, he said that 50GB of data, which is supposed to last a month, often finishes within just three days. He questioned why internet services in Nigeria are so expensive and unreliable compared to other countries.
IGoSave has called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to look into the activities of internet providers.
He believes these companies are exploiting Nigerians, charging high fees for data that disappears too quickly.
He also pointed out that Nigeria’s minimum wage is low, yet people are forced to pay high prices for unreliable internet. He likened telecom companies to internet fraudsters, saying they are taking advantage of the citizens.
Many Nigerians have complained about data costs and network issues for years, but there has been little change. IGoSave’s public call for an investigation may bring more attention to the issue. Will the authorities take action? Nigerians will be watching closely.
