A former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has urged the Nigerian government to set up a school safety task force to protect students.
Speaking at the 2025 International Hybrid Conference organized by the Faculty of Education, Federal University Gusau, Zamfara State, Buratai emphasized the need for stronger security measures in schools. He was represented by retired Brigadier General MK Galadanchi.
He explained that the task force should include military officers, police, and community leaders to create security strategies for schools in high-risk areas. He also suggested using surveillance technology, including drones, to monitor schools and prevent attacks.
Buratai highlighted that education is essential for national development, and if it is not protected, Nigeria’s future is at risk. He encouraged Nigerians to work together to ensure every child has access to safe and quality education.
He also pointed out a 2024 UNICEF survey that found 10 million children in Nigeria are out of school, with 60% of them being girls. Additionally, he stressed the importance of supporting children with disabilities, who face even more challenges in getting an education.
