Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is facing criticism for his recent comments about the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
While discussing Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or, Carragher suggested that playing for Egypt might hurt Salah’s chances because AFCON is not a “major tournament.”
Speaking on Sky Sports after Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Manchester City, Carragher said, “I think the problem is that Salah plays for Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in a major tournament or has a great chance of winning.”
He added that players who shine in the Champions League or “major tournaments” like the Euros or Copa America usually have a better shot at the Ballon d’Or.
His comments immediately sparked backlash. Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards quickly corrected him, saying, “AFCON is a major tournament because a lot of people are watching. It’s a big tournament, just so you know.”
Carragher then questioned whether Egypt could compete for the World Cup, suggesting that only the biggest international tournaments influence the Ballon d’Or race.
However, Daniel Sturridge disagreed, saying, “If winning the Euros or Copa America is considered big, then AFCON is on the same level.”
Despite the controversy, Salah remains one of the top contenders for this year’s Ballon d’Or. The Liverpool star has been in incredible form, scoring 25 goals and providing 15 assists this season. He could help Liverpool achieve a historic treble, including the Premier League, Champions League, and Carabao Cup.
Carragher’s remarks have sparked debate among football fans, with many defending AFCON as an important and respected tournament in international football.
