The United States’ envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Kyiv on Thursday. However, there was no immediate update on whether their discussion helped ease tensions between the two countries.
Recently, Zelenskiy had criticized Trump for spreading Russian misinformation, but later softened his stance. This came after Trump accused Ukraine of starting the three-year war with Russia and even referred to Zelenskiy as a dictator.
The US president, who has been in office for only a month, is eager to end the war quickly. However, his decision to hold initial talks with Russia without involving Ukraine or European allies has caused concern. Vice President JD Vance stated that the war cannot end without negotiations with Russia.
Trump’s envoy to Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, said upon his arrival in Kyiv that he was there to listen. Following his meeting with Zelenskiy, neither side immediately shared details about their discussion.
Trump aims to rebuild relations with Russia while also investing in Ukraine’s mineral resources, which are essential for energy production. However, Ukraine rejected the initial US proposal because it lacked security guarantees.
White House national security adviser Mike Waltz urged Ukraine to reconsider and accept the minerals deal. He suggested that Ukraine should reduce its criticism of the US and sign the agreement.
The situation remains tense as Ukraine weighs its next steps in negotiations.
