Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has spoken out about the ongoing closure of the Head Bridge Market in Onitsha. The market was shut down because of concerns about illegal drug trading in one section known as Ogbo Ogwu.
While Obi condemns illegal activities like drug trading, he believes that the closure of other nearby markets is unfair and excessive.
Obi pointed out that markets like Rod, Allied and Tools, Plumbing Materials, Timber, Surgical, and Provision Markets, which are not involved in drug trading, are being affected by the closure.
He urged the government to reopen these markets immediately, as their closure is causing hardship for millions of traders and their families.
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi emphasized that a transparent approach should be taken when inspecting the markets.
He suggested that store owners should be present during searches, and items should be removed according to the law.
Obi also shared his experience as the former Governor of Anambra State, where he dealt with similar public health issues.
He said that problems were addressed fairly and cooperatively with the help of relevant agencies, preventing unnecessary disruption to the economy.
Obi called for a more balanced strategy that would protect public health while also considering the economic impact on traders. He believes the current approach needs to be reconsidered to avoid further harm to the local economy.
