A Kano State High Court has ruled that the federal government should not interfere with the funds of the 44 local governments in the state.
The decision came on Monday, delivered by Justice Musa Ibrahim Karaye, after reviewing evidence presented by the local government representatives.
The case started when the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) requested a court order to stop the federal government from distributing funds to the local governments.
They claimed there were problems with the local government elections held in October 2024 by the state’s electoral commission.
Previously, the court had issued a temporary order, instructing the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), and other relevant bodies to not touch the funds until the case was settled.
Barrister Bashir Yusuf Tudun Wuzirchi, who represented the local governments, spoke after the ruling.
He said, “We filed this case to protect Kano from those trying to block development by targeting local governments. The court ruled in our favor, ordering the federal government not to tamper with funds that belong to the local governments.”
It is still unclear if the opposition party will challenge the decision. Kano State remains in a political struggle between the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and APC as both parties fight for public support ahead of the 2027 elections.
