Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Chelsea are struggling because they miss Nicolas Jackson. The Senegalese striker is currently out with a hamstring injury, and Merson says his absence is affecting the team’s performance, especially in attack.
Chelsea recently suffered a 3-0 defeat against Brighton in the Premier League, and Merson explained why Jackson’s presence is crucial. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said, “They miss Jackson. Palmer makes Jackson, and Jackson makes Palmer.”
Merson believes that while Cole Palmer is a top-quality player, his effectiveness depends on the players around him. He explained that Jackson’s movement helps stretch the game, creating space for Palmer to play.
Without Jackson making those runs, Palmer is forced to drop deeper, which slows down Chelsea’s attacking play.
With Jackson sidelined, Chelsea have struggled to create chances. Merson pointed out that Christopher Nkunku, another key attacker, also prefers to come short for the ball. This makes Chelsea’s attack too static, allowing opponents to defend more easily.
Merson’s comments highlight how important Jackson is to Chelsea’s system. His energy and willingness to make runs give Palmer the space he needs to perform at his best.
Until Jackson returns, Chelsea may continue to find it difficult to break down defenses.
