Senior civil servants pacified as Abia Govt, labour correct minimum wage underpayments

salary discrepancies in the implementation of the new national minimum wage. The issue, which affected civil servants from levels 8 to 17, has now been corrected through an official agreement with organised labour.

In October 2024, the state government started paying the new minimum wage, but some senior civil servants noticed that their salary increases were not properly reflected.

Governor Alex Otti promised to address the issue, and on Friday, a final agreement was signed at the Government House in Umuahia.

Governor Otti, represented by his Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, praised the labour leaders for their dedication and assured them that the government remains committed to workers’ welfare.

He urged civil servants to stay dedicated to their duties, saying, “To whom much is given, much is expected.”

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abia, Okoro Ogbonnaya, thanked the governor for keeping his promise. He said the correction shows the government’s sincerity and commitment to fair wages for all workers.

Many senior civil servants welcomed the development, saying it has restored their pride and ensured they are paid fairly for their work. With this correction, Abia workers can now focus on contributing to the state’s progress with renewed motivation.
