Senate urges FG to include North-East in N4.2trn super highway projects

The Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Government to include the North-East region in its N4.2 trillion super highway project.

This call came after Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje, representing Gombe Central, raised concerns about the lack of road projects in the region during a Senate session.

Goje pointed out that while other parts of the country have significant road allocations, the North-East only has two approved projects: the Yola-Fufore-Gurin Road in Adamawa State (N11.81 billion) and the Lamido Road in Taraba State (N7.68 billion).

He emphasized that many other roads in the region, such as the Bauchi-Gombe road, Potiskum-Gombe road, and Yola-Mubi road, are in poor condition and need urgent repairs.

He also noted that the North-East is the only region not connected to the Federal Government’s super highway project.

However, he commended President Bola Tinubu for the initiative, which aims to improve road safety and boost economic activities across the country.

During the debate, other senators supported Goje’s motion and listed bad roads in their own regions that also require rehabilitation.

Senator Solomon Adeola, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, clarified that the N4.2 trillion super highway project specifically covers the Badagry-Sokoto and Lagos-Calabar coastal roads.

He assured that President Tinubu has set aside N500 billion for road repairs nationwide, ensuring no region is excluded.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio concluded the discussion by stressing the need for a clear plan to maintain and rehabilitate roads across Nigeria. He warned that without a structured approach, poor road conditions will remain a major issue.

The Senate’s call highlights the urgent need for better road infrastructure in the North-East, ensuring equal development across all regions of Nigeria.
