Kenneth Okonkwo, a former member of the Labour Party (LP) and Nollywood actor-turned-politician, has called for President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step aside from the 2027 presidential race.
Okonkwo, who previously supported Obi in the 2023 election, believes it is time for fresh leadership in Nigeria.
In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Okonkwo stated that these political figures should allow new candidates a chance to lead Nigeria in the upcoming election.
He emphasized that in Nigeria, winning an election is not enough; one must fight to secure and honor the mandate given by the people.
Though Okonkwo worked closely with Obi in the 2023 election, he made it clear that his support for Obi was now in the past.
He ruled out backing Obi in the 2027 elections and insisted that whatever happened in the 2023 election should stay in the past.
Okonkwo also announced his resignation from the Labour Party, citing internal issues within the party. He revealed that his resignation would be effective from February 25, 2025, and he left the party on principle.
Okonkwo has no plans to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), criticizing the ruling party for failing to address Nigeria’s challenges.
He added that he would only consider rejoining the APC if the party changes its approach and starts making positive changes for Nigeria.
Okonkwo’s stance highlights growing dissatisfaction with the current political landscape in Nigeria and his call for new leadership in the 2027 elections.
