The U.S. government has decided to stop giving financial aid to South Africa after it took Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over genocide claims.
President Donald Trump signed an order cutting assistance, which was nearly $440 million in 2023.
The White House said the decision was made because of South Africa’s stance against Israel, a key U.S. ally.
The ICJ case accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, where thousands of people have died. The U.S. government sees this as South Africa acting against Washington and its allies.
Another reason given was South Africa’s land policies. Trump and others, including billionaire Elon Musk, claim—without proof—that white farmers in the country are losing their land unfairly due to government policies.
Along with cutting aid, Trump announced that the U.S. would create a plan to help white South African farmers and their families move to America as refugees.
The government will prioritize their admission through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.
This move is likely to increase tensions between the U.S. and South Africa. It also shows the Trump administration’s strong support for Israel in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s case at the ICJ continues, with global attention on Israel’s military actions.
