Osun mayhem: Governor Adeleke orders arrests, as community leaders give insight

The Osun State government is taking action after a violent clash in Ido-Ayegunle left four people dead and 25 injured. Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered the immediate arrest of those responsible, vowing that justice will be served. The conflict, which also saw seven police officers injured and properties destroyed, stems from a long-standing dispute over traditional leadership.

Governor Adeleke expressed deep concern over the violence and commended security agencies for their swift response in arresting several suspects. He also directed the police to investigate those who may have sponsored the attack.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor denied any wrongdoing in the appointment of Prince Timileyin Oluyemi Ajayi as the new Olojudo of Ido-Ayegunle. He reassured residents that the government followed due process and promised that peace would be restored.

The crisis in Ido-Ayegunle is tied to a decades-long dispute with neighboring Esa-Oke. Chief Ibironke Busuyi, a community leader, explained that the conflict dates back to 1995 when their former king, Adekanmi Ajayi Aselebe, was appointed as the 16th Oba of Ido-Ayegunle. His elevation in 2014 was opposed by the leadership of Esa-Oke, leading to repeated clashes.

After his passing, Oba Adeyemi Adediran of Esa-Oke appointed another leader for Ido-Ayegunle, which the community rejected. Despite government intervention confirming Ido-Ayegunle’s independence, tensions have continued, with claims that Esa-Oke residents are encroaching on Ido-Ayegunle’s land.

Oladiti Awodiran, a representative of Esa-Oke, argued that Ido-Ayegunle is not an independent community but a part of Esa-Oke. He insisted that appointing a traditional ruler in the area contradicts historical and cultural norms. He also raised concerns about the arrest of Esa-Oke youths, calling for an investigation into the killings during the crisis.

The Owamiran of Esa-Oke, Oba Adeyemi Adediran, has urged residents to remain calm. Speaking with Radio Nigeria, he called on security agencies to restore order and ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Governor Adeleke has reassured the public that the government is committed to ending the violence. He urged residents to remain calm as security agencies continue their investigations.

“The security agencies are already rounding up the perpetrators of the violence. Culprits will face justice,” the governor said.

As the situation unfolds, the Osun State government remains focused on maintaining law and order while ensuring that disputes are resolved peacefully.
