Aba Power PLC has announced the suspension of electricity restoration in Ukwa West Local Government Area (LGA) due to repeated vandalism. The company stated that despite its efforts to reconnect the area, vandals continue to damage power infrastructure, making it impossible to maintain a stable supply.
The company’s Head of Technical, Simeon Akpata, spoke to journalists about the situation. He revealed that just last week, while workers were installing conductors, vandals struck again and stole nearly a kilometer of power lines.
“At this point, we had to stop the project because it makes no sense to continue if this is the reality,” Akpata said.
Akpata also shared that in the past year, more than 73 transformers within Aba township have been vandalized. These acts of sabotage have left entire communities without electricity.
Aba Power has called on security agencies and local leaders to step in and help protect power installations. The company stressed that without better security, it cannot guarantee a consistent power supply.
The decision to halt power restoration has angered many residents of Ukwa West, who feel abandoned. Some community members, including Ekeke Simeon, Nwogu Everest, and Nwanyieze Chisaokwu, expressed disappointment, stating that it is unfair to leave their area in darkness.
Ukwa West is an oil-producing region, and the residents pointed out that Aba Power sources some of its gas supply from there. They believe it is insensitive for the company to ignore their needs while benefiting from their resources.
The people of Ukwa West are calling on the government and security agencies to address the issue of vandalism so that electricity can be restored. They hope that with stronger security measures, Aba Power will resume its work and bring light back to their communities.
