Nigerian activist and politician Reno Omokri has taken a swipe at singer Davido while congratulating Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, for winning a Grammy award. Tems won the Best African Music Performance category at the 67th Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 2.
In a post shared on his Instagram page, Reno wrote;
‘’Congratulations, Tems, and thank you for bringing the Best African Music Performance Grammy back to Nigeria. It is so delightful that a proud Nigerian who always speaks well of her country has achieved the rare honour of being a double Grammy winner. We are happy for and with you, Tems. If only others can learn from you, they may have their own Grammy to boast of.”
In another post, Reno wrote;
”To Win a Grammy As a Nigerian Artiste, Associate With a Nigerian Flag, Not The Flag of a Colonial Oppressor, Otherwise Your Ambition Will Be in Shambles!”
”When you praise the flag and image of your country, Providence will raise your swag and visage to a Grammy!” he added
While celebrating Tems’ achievement, Reno subtly criticized Davido over his past remarks about Nigeria. In November 2024, Davido appeared on the US podcast The Big Homies House and expressed concerns about the situation in Nigeria. He said things were not “cool back home” and advised black Americans against relocating to Nigeria.
“It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles. I am talking about the situation in the country. Now the exchange rate is messed up, a lot of stuffs are not going well. The economy is just not good enough. The oil price is too high. Imagine the country that produces oil, paying more for it than a country importing oil.
It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles. I do my part, I am an ambassador. When I go home and I am filming, I am not going to show the bad parts.”Davido has said on the podcast
Davido’s comments sparked backlash from many, including Reno Omokri. At the time, Reno slammed Davido on social media, calling his statement “ignorant” and “unpatriotic.”
Now, while praising Tems for bringing pride to Nigeria with her Grammy win, Reno seems to have taken another shot at Davido, reigniting their past disagreement.
