The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to the ongoing crisis in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying it is caused by personal ambitions within the party.
APC’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, stated that his party is not responsible for PDP’s problems and has no reason to fear the opposition. He was responding to allegations by former PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who claimed that APC was bribing opposition leaders with ₦50 million each to weaken the party.
Speaking at an APC event in Osun State, Basiru said,
“The crisis in PDP is caused by the ambitions of certain individuals. As the ruling party, it is to our advantage if they cannot resolve their internal issues. It is not our job to fix their problems.”
The PDP’s troubles worsened last week when two senior members, Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye, clashed over the position of National Secretary.
A Court of Appeal in Enugu ruled in favor of Ude-Okoye, declaring him the rightful National Secretary after Anyanwu vacated the position to contest the Imo State governorship election. However, Anyanwu refused to accept the ruling, arguing that his appeal to the Supreme Court means the position should remain his until a final judgment is given.
This leadership struggle has further divided the PDP, creating uncertainty within the opposition party. Meanwhile, APC appears unbothered by the situation, seeing it as an advantage ahead of future elections.
