Herdsmen allegedly destroy five-hectare rice plantation in Ogun

A rice farmer in Ogun State, Okegbenro Julius, recently experienced a major setback when herdsmen allegedly invaded his five-hectare rice farm in Ilupeju Ibaro Village, Abeokuta. According to reports, the herdsmen brought a large number of cows to the farm, resulting in extensive damage to the crops.

The incident occurred around 6 PM, and a security guard on the farm managed to record video evidence. However, the herdsmen fled the scene upon realizing they were being watched, leaving one cow behind. Julius later reported the incident to the Ilupeju Police Division.

In response, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, took immediate action by instructing the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to convene an emergency meeting. The meeting involved community leaders, farmers, and herders, with the goal of preventing further conflicts.

The police reassured residents that they are committed to maintaining peace and security in the state. Commissioner Ogunlowo emphasized the importance of fostering understanding between farming and herding communities to avoid such incidents in the future.

In a related development, the Mowe community in Ogun State faced tension after six cows belonging to the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association were allegedly killed. Alhaji Muhammed, the chairman of the association, reported the incident to the police, accusing the Baale of Amu Village, Abiodun Ogunyemi, of being responsible.

The police promptly arrested the suspect and opened an investigation. To prevent the situation from escalating, the Commissioner of Police directed the DPO in Mowe to mediate a resolution. During a meeting with stakeholders, both parties agreed to reconcile and pledged to avoid future disputes. As part of the agreement, villagers agreed to allocate designated grazing areas for herders.

These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges between farmers and herders in Nigeria. However, the proactive steps taken by the Ogun State Police Command demonstrate the importance of dialogue and collaboration in resolving conflicts. By involving community leaders and creating agreements, the state is working towards lasting peace and better cooperation between farmers and herders.
