Edo State Gets First Female Police Commissioner

Edo State has achieved a significant milestone with the appointment of Betty Otimenyin as its first female Commissioner of Police. She officially began her duties on Monday, January 27, succeeding Umoru Ozigi, who retired on January 25 after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60.

Betty Otimenyin, the 49th person to hold this position in the state, was warmly received at the Police Command headquarters, where a guard of honour welcomed her just before 10 a.m. During a brief interview, Otimenyin expressed her dedication to making Edo State safer. She assured residents that she would work tirelessly to reduce crime levels. “I will continue until the crime rate comes down,” she stated confidently.

Otimenyin also addressed the issue of misconduct among officers, vowing to tackle extortion and ensure that the force upholds the highest standards. This aligns with the Inspector-General of Police’s efforts to curb such practices across the country.

Additionally, she promised to focus on protecting vulnerable groups, especially women and children, from violence and abuse. Her wealth of experience, gained since joining the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet ASP in 1992, is expected to bring effective leadership. Before this appointment, she served as Commissioner of Police in the Force Intelligence Department, handling administrative responsibilities.

Betty Otimenyin’s appointment marks a new chapter for Edo State, and her leadership is set to bring impactful changes in the fight against crime and injustice.
