Pete Hegseth, a former Fox News personality and conservative commentator, has been confirmed as Secretary of Defense under President Donald Trump’s administration. His confirmation came after a highly divisive Senate vote, with all 50 Democratic senators opposing his nomination. The tie-breaking vote was cast by Vice President JD Vance, ensuring Hegseth’s appointment.
Hegseth’s confirmation did not come without controversy. He faced allegations of sexual assault and workplace misconduct, as well as criticism for his views against women serving in combat roles. He also openly supported the removal of certain military generals and voiced opposition to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the military.
Although Hegseth received strong Republican support, three GOP senators—Mitch McConnell, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski—voted against him. During his confirmation hearing, Hegseth dismissed allegations against him as “anonymous smears” and avoided answering questions about his past behavior. He also sidestepped inquiries about following unconstitutional orders.
Hegseth’s confirmation highlights sharp divisions in the Senate and raises ongoing concerns about accountability, leadership, and policies within the military.
