Nigeria To Open First AI University In Epe, Lagos

Nigeria is taking a bold step into the future with the launch of its first university dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI), Wini University, in Epe, Lagos. This institution is set to make Africa a key player in the global AI market while equipping Nigerian youth with cutting-edge technology skills.

Inspired by Qatar’s AI university, the journey to Wini University began in 2016. A group of visionaries from Boston and Nigeria laid the groundwork, and after years of planning and securing approval from the National University Commission (NUC), the project is now becoming a reality.

The university is designed to be more than just a place of learning—it’s a hub for innovation. Wini University aims to transform Lagos into Africa’s own Silicon Valley by teaching high-demand skills such as blockchain, machine learning, quantum computing, and generative AI. With the global AI market projected to reach $4.6 trillion by 2040, this initiative could help Africa claim its share of the booming industry.

The choice of Epe as the university’s location aligns with Lagos State’s vision of becoming the “California of Africa.” The initiative has strong backing from President Bola Tinubu, who is working to attract global investors, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is committed to boosting Lagos’s economy. Traditional rulers in Epe have also contributed by donating ancestral land for the university’s permanent campus.

Wini University is expected to significantly impact Epe’s economy, shifting it from agriculture to a tech-driven economy. The area could see an influx of innovations like drones, humanoid robots, and AI solutions for tackling climate change. Additionally, the project is likely to create quality jobs, attract global partnerships, and bring investments to the region.

To fulfill its mission, Wini University must address several challenges:

Creating world-class facilities and hiring experienced faculty will require substantial funding.

The curriculum must remain updated to equip students with skills that match international standards.

Ensuring that students from all backgrounds can access the university is vital for it to make a broad impact.

  1. Wini University is more than just an educational institution—it’s a step toward positioning Africa as a leader in global technology and innovation. By equipping young Nigerians with cutting-edge skills, it promises to shape the continent’s tech future and open new doors for economic growth.

This is a transformative project that has the potential to place Africa firmly on the global technology map. If implemented successfully, Wini University could be the beginning of a tech revolution in Nigeria and beyond.
