Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, has voiced his concerns after his team’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday. The loss has left him particularly worried about his teammates’ lack of confidence on the field.
Brighton took the lead early in the match with Yankuba Minteh’s goal in the 5th minute. Fernandes managed to bring United level in the 23rd minute. However, Brighton regained the advantage in the second half, with Kaoru Mitoma scoring in the 60th minute. A mistake by United’s goalkeeper André Onana allowed Georginio Rutter to seal the win for Brighton in the 79th minute.
After the match, Fernandes shared his frustrations with the press. He explained, “What worries me the most is the lack of confidence we have at the moment to do the things we are able to do. I don’t mind anyone losing the ball if they’re trying to help the team, but we need players to trust themselves.”
In his interview with BBC, Fernandes added, “We can’t afford to concede goals so easily. We need to be more aggressive on the ball because the Premier League is full of high-quality teams. We have to play with high intensity at all times. We need to be braver with the ball, especially in the final third and in between the lines. I believe confidence and bravery are key to improving our play.”
This defeat left Manchester United sitting in 13th place with 26 points from 22 games, highlighting the team’s struggles this season. Fernandes’ call for more confidence and bravery on the pitch could be the key to turning their season around.
