The peaceful farming community of Ilewo Orile, Abeokuta North, Ogun State, has been plunged into sorrow after the tragic murder of 29-year-old Gloria Peter Ajine. A hardworking mother of one, Gloria was killed on her farm while harvesting vegetables for the market.
Gloria, described as a loving and dedicated woman, went to her farm to gather produce on January 16. Hours later, her lifeless body was found in a pool of blood. Her grieving husband, Peter Ajine, spoke about the loss of his wife and the impact on their family:
“She was everything to us. She worked so hard for our son and for our future. I can’t understand why anyone would do this.”
Originally from Benue State, Gloria and her family had moved to Ogun State in search of a better life. Now, her husband and their one-year-old son face an uncertain future without her.
Residents of Ilewo Orile are struggling to come to terms with the gruesome crime. Many described Gloria as a kind and hardworking woman who had no enemies.
“This is a tragedy for our community,” said Mrs. Rukayat Oladimeji, a neighbour. “Gloria was always smiling and ready to help others. We can’t believe she’s gone.”
Another resident, Mr. Gbenga Adewale, expressed growing fear:
“If this could happen to her, it could happen to any of us. The police must act quickly to ensure our safety.”
The Ajine family and local leaders are urging authorities to take immediate action to find the perpetrators. Mr. Ajine made an emotional plea to the government and law enforcement:
“I’ve lost my wife and my best friend. Our son has lost his mother. We need justice for Gloria. This cannot go unanswered.”
Civil society groups, including the Human Rights Advocacy Watch Campaign and the All Nigerian Women League, have also condemned the crime. In a joint statement, they highlighted the need for stronger protections for women, especially in rural areas:
“This murder reflects the growing insecurity in our society and the failure to protect vulnerable citizens. We demand a thorough investigation and swift justice for Gloria and her family.”
As of now, the police are still investigating the case. The Ajine family, supported by their community, continues to demand answers.
Gloria’s tragic death serves as a painful reminder of the need for greater safety measures and justice for victims of violence. Her family and neighbours hope that her killers will be found and held accountable, ensuring that no other family suffers such a devastating loss.
