Two suspects arrested as Navy raids pirates and kidnappers’ camp in Bayelsa

On January 11, 2025, the Nigerian Navy conducted a successful raid on a pirates’ and kidnappers’ camp in the Fununu community, located in the Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. This raid was part of Operation Delta Sanity II, a major operation aimed at eradicating criminal activities in Nigeria’s maritime region.

The suspects, who were hiding out in the camp, engaged in a gun battle with Navy personnel that lasted over 30 minutes. Despite the criminals’ resistance, the Navy’s superior firepower forced them to flee, although two suspects—a man and a woman—were apprehended.

During the operation, a variety of weapons and other items were recovered. Among the items seized were an AK-56 assault rifle, several locally-made firearms, pump-action guns, and ammunition. Additionally, personal belongings such as phones, a national ID card, cash, and a chainsaw machine were found.

The ongoing success of Operation Delta Sanity has been part of the Navy’s strategy to maintain peace and security in Nigeria’s maritime areas, with the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, reaffirming the Navy’s commitment to fighting crime in these waters.

The operation continues to show the Nigerian Navy’s dedication to ensuring safer seas and putting a stop to piracy and kidnapping activities that threaten the nation’s security.
