Bird flu, also known as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), has been confirmed in Kano State, Nigeria. This outbreak has affected different bird species, including layers, ducks, guinea fowl, and turkeys.

The Federal Government has issued a warning about the high risk of the disease spreading further. A circular signed by Dr. Taiwo Olasoju on behalf of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria emphasized the need for immediate action. The circular called for increased surveillance, education on biosecurity for poultry farmers and traders, and prompt reporting of unusual bird deaths.

The outbreak was linked to an incident in December 2024 when a secondary school student from Gwale Local Government Area (LGA) bought a duck from Janguza Market in Tofa LGA. After adding the duck to his flock of hens and chickens, the duck died, followed by the death of several chickens.

Tests conducted at the Gwale Veterinary Clinic in January 2025 confirmed the presence of bird flu.

According to Dr. Usman Gwarzo, Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) in Kano State, no similar cases have been reported in commercial poultry farms. However, the PAN Kano chapter is working closely with the state government to create awareness among poultry farmers and encourage them to report any unusual deaths in their birds.

Experts are urging farmers to take these precautions:

• Follow strict biosecurity measures, such as limiting access to poultry farms.
• Separate new birds from existing flocks for observation.
• Report any suspicious bird deaths immediately to veterinary clinics.

By acting quickly, the spread of bird flu can be controlled and prevented from reaching neighboring states or spreading nationwide.

The government and poultry stakeholders are working together to ensure that this outbreak is contained as soon as possible.
