Optimism, Anxiety As Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal Begins

The Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has started today in Benin City, marking the beginning of a legal battle that could reshape the state’s political landscape. The case involves a challenge to the results of the September 21 gubernatorial election, which was won by the All Progressives Congress (APC). Supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are hopeful, while the APC has shown signs of concern.

Asue Ighodalo, the PDP candidate, is contesting the election outcome declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The PDP claims that the election process was manipulated through alleged irregularities, such as inflated votes for the APC in their strongholds and the unlawful cancellation of votes in PDP’s favor. The party believes that there was an unlawful collaboration between the APC and INEC to rig the election.

PDP spokesperson Barrister Tony Ehilebo expressed confidence in the party’s position, stating that they have gathered overwhelming evidence to prove the election was rigged. He is optimistic that the tribunal will restore what they consider to be the true will of the people and uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.

On the other hand, the APC has dismissed the PDP’s claims as unfounded. Chief Alex Okosun, a senior APC leader, described the petition as unnecessary. He urged Asue Ighodalo to move on and work together with Governor Monday Okpebholo, stressing the importance of unity, particularly now that the state has its first Esan governor. Okosun remains confident that the election results are legitimate and will be upheld by the tribunal.

Governor Okpebholo’s tenure has been fraught with controversies, from struggles with the state budget to his defiance of Supreme Court rulings on local government autonomy. These actions have sparked criticism from opposition groups and civil society, leading to calls for a re-evaluation of his leadership.

As the tribunal proceedings unfold, all eyes are on the court to see whether it will uphold the results of the controversial election or rule in favor of the PDP. The case is being viewed as a significant test for Nigeria’s judicial system and its ability to protect democracy and ensure fair elections.
