Death toll rises as California wildfires rage into fifth day

The California wildfires have claimed the lives of 11 people, with officials warning the number could rise as the fires rage into their fifth day. Over 12,300 homes and buildings have been destroyed since the fires broke out earlier this week, leaving thousands of families displaced.

Fresh evacuation orders were issued on Friday night for areas like Mandeville Canyon as the fires continued to spread rapidly. Many residents are scrambling to find safety as emergency responders work tirelessly to contain the flames.

Whisker Labs, a company that tracks electrical activity, reported a surge in power grid faults in the same areas affected by the Eaton, Palisades, and Hurst Fires. The company’s CEO, Bob Marshall, explained that these faults can happen when tree branches touch power lines or when wires collide during strong winds, creating sparks. While these faults were detected just before the fires started, it’s unclear if they directly caused the wildfires.

Authorities are urging residents to follow evacuation orders and stay informed as firefighters and emergency teams continue their efforts to manage the disaster.
