Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has accused Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, of making false claims and inciting threats against APC spokesperson Felix Morka.
The controversy began after Peter Obi alleged that Morka had threatened his life. Obi made this claim following his New Year’s Day critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He questioned if he had “crossed the line” after facing alleged threats to his life, family, and associates.
Obi’s accusations were based on a statement Morka made in an interview. Morka reportedly said, “Peter Obi has crossed the line so many times, and he has what’s coming to him. Whatever he gets, he should manage it.” Obi interpreted this as a threat. However, Morka denied the claim, saying his comments were taken out of context and that he never issued any threats.
Ganduje described Obi’s allegations as false and harmful. He accused Obi of spreading misinformation, which led to online supporters issuing death threats against Morka and his family.
In a statement, Ganduje emphasized that Morka’s comments were merely part of his duties as the APC’s National Publicity Secretary. According to Ganduje, Morka was responding to criticisms about the government, including remarks about “prophets of doom” and “voodoo economics.” He clarified that nothing in Morka’s remarks suggested a threat to Obi or anyone else.
Ganduje pointed out that free speech is protected under Nigeria’s Constitution and applies to everyone, including political figures. He urged Obi to accept criticism as part of the democratic process and to avoid spreading false information. Ganduje also questioned whether Obi expected the APC to remain silent in the face of opposition allegations.
The APC Chairman reaffirmed the party’s commitment to democracy, stating they would continue to counter unfounded claims with facts and hold opposition leaders accountable when necessary.
This incident highlights the growing tensions in Nigeria’s political landscape as leaders navigate criticism and public discourse.
