Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has sparked conversations about his political future after visiting the national headquarters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Abuja. The visit took place just two days after he denied rumors of defecting from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

El-Rufai had earlier addressed the defection claims through his official X account, calling them false and threatening legal action against those spreading the rumors. However, his visit to the SDP office has raised eyebrows, with many wondering if a new political move is on the horizon.

Photographs from the visit were shared by Ahmed Tijjani Ramalan, the Chairman of Liberty TV and Radio Kaduna. Ahmed, who is also a former Chairman of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Board, revealed that El-Rufai met with other prominent politicians. He stated that the meeting discussed plans to create a unified political platform to challenge the APC in the 2027 general elections.

This isn’t the first time El-Rufai has been linked to the SDP. In March 2024, he made a similar visit to the party’s headquarters. At the time, his spokesperson, Muyiwa Adekeye, clarified that the visit was only a courtesy call in response to a previous visit by SDP Chairman Shehu Musa Gabam. His team denied any political undertones in that visit, a stance they may take again regarding this latest meeting.

With the 2027 elections drawing closer, El-Rufai’s moves continue to generate public interest. Whether this visit signifies a shift in his political alignment or simply another courtesy call, the coming months will reveal more about his plans and their impact on Nigeria’s political landscape.
