Hospitals in the UK are under immense strain due to a dramatic rise in flu cases and respiratory illnesses. Royal Liverpool Hospital has declared a critical incident, reporting an unprecedented number of flu patients and Emergency Department (A&E) wait times of up to 50 hours.
The hospital described the situation as “extremely busy,” with staff working tirelessly to prioritize the care of the sickest patients. A spokesperson said, “We have taken this action to ensure the safe care of all our patients. While we are doing everything possible to manage the demand, some people will experience longer waits.”
To alleviate pressure, the hospital is collaborating with other organizations to discharge medically fit patients more quickly. They also urge the public to consider alternative healthcare options, such as visiting a GP, pharmacy, or walk-in center. NHS 111 is recommended for guidance on the best care option, helping to reduce unnecessary visits to A&E.
To limit the spread of winter viruses like flu and norovirus, hospitals are asking patients and visitors to follow these steps:
- Practice regular hand hygiene.
- Only visit essential areas in the hospital.
- Wear masks in clinical areas if requested.
The flu crisis isn’t isolated to Liverpool. Last week, Royal Cornwall Hospital also declared a critical incident, citing similar pressures. Across the UK, flu cases have skyrocketed, with hospital admissions four times higher than a month ago.
Recent statistics reveal over 4,500 hospital beds were occupied daily by flu patients last week—a 3.5-fold increase from last year. Critical care cases have surged as well, with a 69% jump in just one week. On Christmas Day, more than 4,100 flu patients were hospitalized, rising to over 5,000 by the end of December.
Health experts emphasize the importance of preventing flu spread. The NHS advises the public to:
- Get vaccinated.
- Follow good hygiene practices.
- Seek medical advice early through NHS 111 or local services.
As flu cases continue to climb, the pressure on the NHS highlights the importance of using healthcare resources wisely and taking preventive measures to protect yourself and others.
